If your not currently a member, but are considering joining IIE (or pursuing a career in IE), we've put some basic information on Industrial Engineering below. We encourage you to follow the links listed for more information on both the Industrial Engineering profession and IIE.

What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial Engineering (IE) is concerned with the design, implementation, and operation of systems that produce products and services. This involves determining and specifying what and how materials, facilities, equipment, people, and information must work together to effectively deliver these products and services with high quality, reliability, and safety, at low cost, and as quickly as possible.

Because every company and organization (including government) is in business to provide some form of products and services, career opportunities for IE's are extraordinarily diverse. As a result of this diversity, many IE's don't have "Industrial Engineer" in their title - they may be manufacturing engineers, production engineers, production / operations managers, plant managers, network and information systems managers and engineers, reliability engineers, quality engineers, maintenance managers / engineers, logistic and distribution engineers / specialists, consultants, and so on.  This is one of the most significant reasons that recent studies have shown that IE's have the greatest job satisfaction of any of the engineering disciplines.

Check out IIE National's Why IE? webpage for more information on Industrial Engineering.

What is IIE?

IIE is the central professional society for those who are in - or preparing for - careers in fields relating to industrial engineering. The institute holds many annual conferences, provides educational publications and seminars, and is the professions spokesgroup on matters such as IE educational requirements and accreditation; engineering licensing, research funding, and laws impacting the profession.  Stop by our Join IIE! page for more information on what IIE has to offer (as well as a downloadable application form).
